Destiny: Awakening Fates
Prologue:
A lone man walked down an empty path. His calm features told the world he was young in age, underneath all that youth belied the spirit of a man who has suffered through many centuries. The path he walked along stretched out for miles, on either side of it were grass and weeds. As this man continued down the path, the grass and weeds turned into shrubs and bushes. Soon those shrubs and bushes became enormous oak trees.
Blaze turned his gaze upward, those crimson pupils staring at the unique colors that surrounded these trees. They weren't normal. Silver leaves grew from the long branches which hung gracefully over the pathway. The bark which covered the trees was of a vibrant gold hue. These trees look familiar..... where have I seen them before?
A gust of wind blew past him lifting his snow colored hair off the nape of his neck. The white leather long coat he was currently wearing also lifted up and settled back down as the wind went past, it's silver and gold buttons reflecting the light of the dull sun.
He took a step forward, hearing a splash beneath his feet. A strange odor began to fill the air and the trees around him began to change. Their beautiful silver leaves wilted and dried up while the trunks of the trees began to rot away. The odor he could smell was of rotting wood and blood. Covering his nose he placed his gaze downward at his feet. The man was standing in a pool of red liquid which was thick and nauseating. His black leather boots were now covered with the sticky liquid.
Now with the scent of blood and rotting flesh in the air, an unnerving stillness filled the area around him. Where moments before he heard the birds chirping or the gentle breeze passing through the trees, the forest was now stagnant. Despite this, the man continued to brave the path ahead of him, a path written with despair and anger.
His eyes, eager and unwavering, scanned the nearby trees for any signs of life. Hidden beneath the shadows of these rotting oaks was what looked like the shadow of a terrible beast. Its fur moved around like fire and was black. With his fangs bared, the creature took a few steps forward. Looking up at the frightened expression on the man with the white hair.
Blaze found himself rooted to the spot, unable to speak.
Throughout his entire existence he had never met a creature so fierce and full of anger. It was as if all the darkness resting within all intelligent beings had come together to create a monster, a demon with only a cruel and twisted heart. But, as he looked into those blood colored eyes he saw something which he had never seen before. A truly frightened look, but at the same time they seemed calm and gentle. Gazing into the beasts eyes he was now only truly afraid of one thing.
What would an animal do if it felt threatened in some way? Would it run and hide? Or would it lash out fiercely in hopes that it can drive the predator away?
As the sky above him began to brighten, the form of this creature came into view. It was a large, black wolf who looked terrified at the sight of him. Blaze waited for a moment to see where it's gaze fell. Realizing now why it looked so frightened, Blaze slowly began to reach for the sheathed sword slung across his shoulders.
It was this weapon that terrified it so. Unsheathing the silver blade from it's rightful place, he tossed it aside as if it were a mere toy. Blaze continued to watch the wolf, trying not to make any movements that may frighten the beast. Lifting a foot he reached over and tapped the sword gently out of the way.
Still watching this strange man, the expression on the wolf's face began to change from a frightened look into one that made it seem playful. “I'm sorry if I frightened you,” Blaze said, as he faced the wolf. “It's a thing I like to carry with me....you know, to feel safe.”
It was as if the wolf could understand his feelings. Brushing away all the fear it might have had, he limped forward and nuzzled his snout against Blaze's legs. After a moment of being affectionate it slowly stepped backwards and sat down, looking up at the man as if waiting for something in return.
Blaze couldn't help but smile at this, “So, do you trust me now that I've thrown away my only form of defense?” he said this as if mocking himself. Kneeling low to the ground he reached out a hand in a kind gesture, one which this creature gladly took. “Do you have a name?”
Touching the head of the wolf, Blaze was overwhelmed by a stream of images flooding into him. Vast images of a distant place; two boys, a white bird, a wolf, a tall, mysterious man and finally a young girl who seemed to be staring up at him.
They had come and gone like the wind passing swiftly through a valley. Blaze stood there clutching his forehead with emotions welling up inside as the last of these visions slowly receded to the back of his mind.
Bewildered at what had just happened, Blaze withdrew his hands from his forehead and looked into the wolf's eyes. It was smiling. He realized then that he knew the name of this creature, knew what it was and why it was there. Dark stared at Blaze for a single moment before changing, becoming a shadow. He bounded towards the white haired man with a look of surprise on his face. Leaping right through Blaze and into the unknown darkness behind him.
It only started to occur to him what the wolf had done a few seconds later. He began to feel drowsy and his eyes started to close of their own accord. Blaze swayed on the spot before falling into a pile of dried up, old leaves. The pile was large enough to keep him from feeling the impact of the ground bellow. He lay there unable to move and fell into a blissful slumber.
